What’s an Air Head?

If you’re into sour stuff, it might be your favorite candy. Buuuuuut, in the world of boats and RVs, an Air Head is a composting toilet. Less yummy, but far more satisfying long-term.

At the time, there were several options.* We chose to buy an Air Head and it turned out to be a solid choice - no pun intended. Their customer service was great and whoever was in charge of their Instagram account was totally on top of things! They were also slightly less expensive than the alternative and were going to arrive sooner.

If you’ve never seen or used a composting toilet before, they are designed to separate urine into a removable jug (for lack of a better word) that can be emptied as needed. The godawful stench of a port-a-potty never takes over your boat because pee and poo are kept separate. Also, no sea water is involved, which is good because that makes black water tanks smell even worse.

So anyway, back to functionality… the poop goes into the base of the toilet (also removable when needed) where it meets the composting mixture and you use a handle to combine it together. A small fan sucks any funky smells out of the boat and into the open air. It takes a little while to get used to putting giant coffee filters into your toilet on occasion, but you do get used to it.

Just remember to keep your stash of coco coir bricks (or your choice of composting material) stocked and you’ll be all set.

*Sorry, Home Depot, but the bright orange bucket with a seat attached to it wasn’t a contender - my mother would never have visited us.
